What to consider when doing landscaping in Kenya

Making your front yard or bark yard look amazing is something everyone plans on doing for his or her house. It might seem easy but that is not the case.

Landscaping can turn your compound into something amazing regardless of the space you have. It goes beyond planting trees, it is an art of creating spaces and places for you to enjoy.

Having this in mind, you need to plan before starting on landscaping and here are thing you need to put into consideration.

Learn about the plants you want

This is finding what works best for your area and what you love. Learning about them might give you an idea of what to put into consideration, what might work for you and how to take care of them when the time comes.  More of are they trees, shrubs, climbing plants, annuals, perennials, succulents, indigenous or exotic?

Choosing a style you want for your yard

You have already done your research and have different ideas in mind already. Choosing a style is choosing what will work in the place you want to do the landscaping. For the decision to be taken, you need to take into account the location, climate, soil type, slopes, if any, and function of your garden.

In Kenya, we have extremely diverse climates depending on where you live. Even around Nairobi, there are big differences in soil types.

What the design will achieve is also important, is it a family garden where children will be playing on, or is it a place you want sit when relaxing. With this in mind you chose depending on what is suitable for you and for your family if you have one.

Planning your space depending what you want too achieve

If you cannot do it on your own, you can seek the help of professionals, who will help you plan depending on the available space. Where everything will go into place. The lawns and hedges, the flowerbeds and borders, shrubs and trees make up this aspect.

Know what you will need

What you will need for the whole process, for example the choice of materials to use for the paving, paths, steps and walls.

Whatever your location in Kenya, the choice is wide, as natural stone, bricks, tiles, concrete, pebbles, timber and much more can be found in most places.

Look around in your area to see what appeals and consider the cost, as this can be a deciding factor.

Plants that will be required

Here is where the fun really begins as we all love choosing the plants for our garden and deciding the best position for them. The decision on the tree species to plant is one of the first considerations. To plant species that either are more indigenous or move away from the exotics. Color is one of the most important aspects of gardening and can make or break your garden. Form, color and texture are very important. Parts of your garden can be in pale shades (Light Pink, Light Blue, Light Green, Aqua, Lavender, Cream, Ivory, White, Light Grey) to provide a relaxing atmosphere, while others can be vibrant with hot colors of reds, oranges and bright yellows. Do not forget plants with scented flowers or leaves.

Have fun, enjoy watching your garden take shape and form, and do not be afraid as plants in the wrong place can be moved and new ones planted.
